DAY 05 - PUNJAB



PUNJAB - LAND OF FIVE RIVERS

Punjab is a land locked state. It shares its border with Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan & Pakistan.

Its capital is UT Chandigarh, which is used by Haryana too.

5 Major Rivers here are Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej . After Pak-India liberation ; three eastern ones are located in India.

RAVI originates from Himachal Pradesh. Dam located - Ranjit Sagar dam.

BEAS originates from Beaskund (Himachal Pradesh). Dams located here are Pong dam & Pandoh dam.

SUTLEJ originates from Rakshastal. Three major dams located on this river are Bhakar dam, Nangal dam, Nathpa Jhakri dam.

Sutlej & Beas river confluences in Punjab at Harike Barrage.

From Harike Barrage starts Indira Gandhi Canal. Which is also India's Longest Canal with 650 km.


11 Wildlife Sanctuaries & 6 Ramsar sites are present here-

1) Harike Wildlife Sanctuary

2) Nangal Wildlife Sanctuary

3) Ropar Conservation Reserve

4) Kanjili Wet Land

5) Beas River Conservation Reserve

6) Keshopur- Miani Community Reserve


*Punjab was major centre for Green Revolution (1967) & it is still India's 3rd largest wheat producer state.
